Accomplishments in Oncology (Fight against Cancer)

The VIRAT hospice currently houses 14 patients. The team are planning with HVB for the future – the search for a new building is ongoing, as well as plans for a new vehicle to act as a bus/ambulance.

The team also welcomed 18 IAS officer trainees at the VIRAT hospice, as part of their formal training, a great honour for the team.

Activities in Cardiology/Cardiothoracic (The Heart)

  • Dr Vijay Agarwal, Paediatric Cardiothoracic Surgeon, continues to operate on the patients identified from the medical camp in Bagalpur, Bihar, India in July 2014. 50 patients have now been operated, leaving a further 150 patients yet to be seen.
  • Dr Anil Kumar Mulpur, Chief Cardiothoracic Surgeon, continues to carry out operations on behalf of Heart Valve Bank in Sunshine Hospital, Hyderabad.
  • Cardiac surgeries are being performed at Sri Sathya Sai Super Specialty Hospitals on a daily basis and Heart Valve Bank provides assistance on an ongoing basis.

Accomplishments in Oncology (Fight against Cancer)

The VIRAT hospice caters for terminally-ill cancer patients with a short life expectancy, allowing them to live their remaining months with dignity. The latest admission was a 25-year old lady, taking the total number of patients to 11.

The team received notification from the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration that 18 IAS officer trainees will be studying the VIRAT modus operandi as part of their training, a matter of great recognition and prestige for the work being done at the hospice.

  • The Sri Sathya Sai Hospital, Surat, returned to full swing following the Diwali celebrations in October. There were 77 cataract operations carried out in November.

HVB Update - October 2014

Activities in Cardiology/Cardiothoracic (The Heart)

  • Dr Vijay Agarwal, Paediatric Cardiothoracic Surgeon, has performed 5 paediatric cardiac surgeries from the patients identified during the medical camp in Bhagalpur, Bihar, India. To date he has performed 42 surgeries and 158 are remaining. Medical management was the best option for 2 of the patients.

Accomplishments in Oncology (Fight against Cancer)

  • Christian priest from Nigeria was investigated in Fortis hospital, Mumbai, India.
  • Due to an unforeseen circumstance, the VIRAT team could not move to the new site. It is in the process of finding a larger building that could potentially accommodate 25 patients. The hospice has had 3 new admissions in October.
  • VIRAT Hospice has already served 130 patients since April 2013, including 14 who are still living in the hospice. The latest admission was a young boy of 8 years with lung cancer.
  • The Collector ( an officer of the Indian Administrative Service, in charge of administration and revenue collection in the area) visited the hospice in October. He was so pleased and touched by the service that he came back to donate his reward money (remuneration received from the government for good governance) to the hospice.

  • • Due to Diwali festival, only 16 patients had cataract surgery and foldable intraocular lens implants, in Sri Sathya Sai Hospital, Surat , in the month of October.

Grama Seva 2014

Over 45,000 saris and 45,000 dhotis were distributed in the villages. The villagers received more than 600,000 food packets and ladoos. Please visit the following link for further information:

Other Projects

Sri Sathya Sai General Hospital, Pothapalli.

The mother and child care unit as well as the regular antenatal camps are all running well in Pothapalli Hospital.

HVB is currently funding the building of an operation theatre, the opening of which has been postponed to the 2nd November 2014. Increased funds will be provided for the sustenance of this facility.

The Child Welfare Project, which includes regular checkups for the children in Government Schools, is being carried out.

The monthly eye camp is ongoing.


HVB Update - September 2014

Activities in Cardiology/Cardiothoracic (The Heart)

19 of the 22 planned operations were performed in the month of September. Two of the patients had fever and the interventions had to be postponed while the third patient had a very small VSD (ventricular septal defect) and medical management was deemed more appropriate. To date, Dr Vijay Agarwal, Paediatric Cardiothoracic Surgeon, has performed 35 surgeries of the 200 patients who were identified during the medical camp in Bhagalpur, Bihar, India. The remaining 165 little souls are still awaiting treatment.

Dr Anil Kumar Mulpur, Chief Cardiothoracic Surgeon, has completed 14 complex cardiac surgeries in September 2014 on behalf of Heart Valve Bank in Sunshine Hospital, Hyderabad. He has now completed 79 cardiac surgeries since November 2013, including 9 in August 2014.

Cardiac surgeries are being performed at Sri Sathya Sai Super Specialty Hospitals on a daily basis and Heart Valve Bank provides assistance on an ongoing basis.

Accomplishments in Oncology (Fight against Cancer)

  • One patient has been successfully operated for uterine cancer in September 2014.
  • Arrangements are underway to get a Christian priest from Nigeria to Fortis hospital, Mumbai, India for treatment of prostate cancer.
  • VIRAT Hospice has already served 127 patients since April 2013, including 14 who are still living in the hospice. The latest admission was a young lady of 25 years old. Mother of a 2 month old baby girl, she has been diagnosed with terminal liver cancer.

HVB Update - August 2014

Activities in Cardiology/Cardiothoracic (The Heart)

  • Dr Vijay Agarwal, Paediatric Cardiothoracic Surgeon, has performed 27 and 54 cardiac surgeries in February and May 2014 respectively. The cost of these operations has been borne by the Being Human Foundation in collaboration with the Heart Valve Bank. On 6th July 2014, Dr Agarwal organised a Medical camp in Bhagalpur in the state of Bihar, India to recruit eligible patients for cardiac surgeries that will be s ponsored by the Being Human Foundation and Heart Valve Bank. Over 200 patients have been identified. Five patients have already been successfully operated. The first heart surgery from the camp was a 22 months old boy.
  • Dr Vijay Agarwal has also recently completed 5 cardiac surgeries at Rajkot hospital on behalf of Heart Valve Bank.
  • Dr Anil Kumar Mulpur, Chief Cardiothoracic Surgeon, has completed 56 cardiac surgeries since November 2013 on behalf of Heart valve bank. These complex surgeries have been performed in Sunshine Hospital, Hyderabad following referrals from the Sri Sathya Sai Super Specialty hospital in Whitefield, Bangalore.
  • Cardiac surgeries are being performed at Sri Sathya Sai Super Specialty Hospitals on a daily basis and Heart Valve Bank provides assistance on an ongoing basis.
  • 13 patients have been operated by Dr Vijay Agarwal in August 2014. The Ram Mehrotra Trust has sponsored 7 of these patients.

Accomplishments in Oncology (Fight against Cancer)

  • 3 patients have been sponsored for investigation and treatment of leukaemia, breast cancer and uterine cancer since 6 May 2014.
  • The capacity of Virat Hospice in Jabalpur has been doubled and funds have been made available to fulfil various reasonable wishes of the patients. From 1st August 2014, Heart Valve Bank will offer funds to triple the initial capacity of the hospice to 25 and to provide a larger place for the hospice to allow more space for the residents to walk around or be wheeled around in the garden. Staffing levels will also be increased through the employment of an oncologist and specialist and general nurses.
  • HVB is in the process of finalising procedures to allow for free treatment of cancer patients with Fortis Hospital.

Undertakings in Ophthalmology (Eye Department)

  • A cataract is a clouding or discoloration of the natural lens of the eye. After the cataract is removed by the surgeon, an artificial lens is placed in the eye to help it focus. This is called an intraocular lens implant. It is the standard of care in all cataract surgeries, unless there is a contra-indication.From January 2014 to August 2014, 446 patients in Sri Sathya Sai Hospital, Surat have had cataract surgery and foldable intraocular lens implants. There are currently 465 patients on the waiting list for a similar intervention.
  • The latest Phaco Machine has been donated to Sri Sathya Sai Hospital Surat, India. Ophthalmic surgeries are being performed on a daily basis. From January 2014 to August 2014, 481 patients in Sri Sathya Sai Hospital, Surat have had cataract surgery and foldable intraocular lens implants.

Dental

Funds have been made available to Sri Sathya Sai Hospital, Surat for the acquisition of dental implants. In February 2014, a dental chair was donated to Dharamshala in Puttaparthi, India to provide free dental care.

Since March 2014, 1482 patients have been provided with free dental consultations and treatment in Dharamshala in the village of Puttaparthi, India.

Grama Seva 2014

Preparations are already underway for the 2014 Grama Seva. Saris and dhotis have been ordered and group songs and programmes have been finalised. Heart Valve Bank is organising a musical offering by a Bollywood star singer at the divine lotus feet in Prashanti Nilayam during the Navratri celebrations.

Other Projects

  • Sri Sathya Sai General Hospital, Pothapalli.

    In 2013, 18,324 patients were seen at this hospital and 18 medical camps were carried out in 18 remote villages.

    Heart Valve Bank recently provided funds to develop a mother and child care unit including the employment of a full time gynaecologist at the Sathya Sai Hospital, Pothapalli.

    HVB is currently funding the building of an operation theatre that will be inaugurated in September 2014. Equipment for the new operation theatre, which includes surgical instruments, has been procured. An X ray machine has also been ordered.

    The Child Welfare Project, which includes regular checkups of the children in Government Schools, is being carried out.

    An eye camp has also been recently organised and identified patients are being sponsored for treatment.

    The outreach health project called Sri Sathya Sai Prana Mitra Project (Sri Sathya Sai Mobile Hospital) has already served 20 villages since 2013. The main objective is to offer medical aid to thousands of under-privileged poor tribal villagers.

    Sri Sathya Sai Deena Bando Project provides food to all attendees of Sri Sathya Sai General Hospital Pothapalli. 14000 food packets have been distributed in 2013.

    This project has extended to the needy in 5 nearby villages where 34,430 food packets were distributed.

  • An ambulance has been donated to the Aurobindo ashram in Pondicherry in February 2014 to assist them in their project to serve the rural areas.
  • Work at the Care Well Medical centre in Nigeria is on-going.
