The Heart Valve Bank Cardiac Camp, Fortis Hospital, Vasai, India 2015

Dr Vijay Agarwal and his team operated on 15 month old baby Shravani who weighs 7 kg in December. The baby had a ToF (Tetralogy of Fallot) heart operation as a result of 4 congenital defects. Defective heart allows oxygenated and deoxygenated blood to mix which means not enough good blood reaches lungs for oxygenation, and consequently oxygen-deprived blood flows through the whole body. This open heart surgery is performed soon after birth or in early infancy and children generally survive to adulthood requiring lifelong specialist medical care.

Sri Ajit Popat visited the patient and parents soon after the operartion.

Dr Vijay also completed 40 cardiac operations on behalf of HVB.

Dr Anilkumar confirmed completion of 103 cardiac operations on behalf of HVB.

Accomplishments in Oncology (Fight against Cancer)

In the quest of building a bigger state of art cancer hospice, the trustees of Virat hospice made an initial agreement for 3 acres of land near the famous tourist town of Bhedaghat, an initiative that was fully supported by the Heart Valve Bank. Bhedaghat is situated in the Jabalpur district in the state of Madhya Pradesh, India. It is flanked by the famous river Narmada and is approximately 20 km from Jabalpur city. It is famous for the Dhuandhar Falls, Marble Rocks, and the Chaunsath Yogini temple, the latter being built in the 10th century by the Kalachuri empire.

On the 15th August 2015, the staff and the patients celebrated the independence day with great fervor and reverence.

Independence Day Celebrations

At the request of the patients, a ‘Ramayan path’ (recitation of the epic Ramayana) was held in the hospice on the 18th August 2015, which was thoroughly enjoyed by one and all.

The Heart Valve Bank Cardiac Camp Vasai, Mumbai, India 2015

Five children from the Vasai Cardiac Camp have been operated by Dr Vijay Agarwal in the month of July 2015 in Fortis Hospital, Mumbai, India.

Below is the story of one of them, which is the integral reason of the existence and continuance of Heart Valve Bank:

Ashwini is an 11.5 years old fortunate and beautiful girl, eldest child of an electrician who was destined to be born with congenital heart disease, in a loving family, who patiently took her to hospital several times for recurrent chest infections, secondary to the congenital heart disease. She was undiagnosed, until the age of 3 months, when she was again admitted in a hospital due to pneumonia. A wise doctor requested an echocardiogram which revealed a hole in her little struggling heart. The news soon dawned on their parents, a life changing moment that laboured their own hearts and souls. Watching helplessly on their beautiful angel chronically tussling life and death, was an indescribable torment to the parents who, by mere misfortune, could not amass the money required for such an expensive surgery, most of their income being blown in the increasing cost of living and the burden of financing recurrent hospital admissions, in the financial capital city of India. It does not take the minutest guess to us, the so called, ‘fortunate’ beings on this earth, to fathom the dream of that extremely hardworking electrician and his caring house wife, who never gave up. But little they knew, the ever compassionate lord, with his watchful eyes, had his own plan and they somehow landed in the HVB/Fortis Child Mission Vasai Cardiac Camp, Mumbai. The conclusion of the latter doctors mirrored the opinion of her previous doctors and the broadcast would have made no sheer difference to the parents but a prick in an already excruciating heart. As luck would have it, the breeze of the Earthly heaven blew soothingly in the torrid fire of the immeasurable despair and frustrations, money and cost were never once deliberated.

On the 29th June 2015, following the surgical intervention by the instrumental Dr Vijay Agarwal, Chief Paediatric Cardiothoracic Surgeon, at Fortis Mulund Hospital, was born another Ashwini star who shone so brilliantly that the years of mounting agonising pain in her parents vanished forever, sprouting the loveliest smile from all.

Does your heart beat for others?

Over a period of one year, 72 children with heart conditions from the Bhagalpur Medical Camp have been operated at the Fortis Mullund Hospital Mumbai by Dr Vijay Agarwal and his team.

The Heart Valve Bank Cardiac Camp

The cardiac camp took place in Vasai, Mumbai on the 30th May 2015. It was inaugurated by Mr Ramesh Sawant, the president of the Sathya Sai Seva Organisation of the Indian State of Maharshtra and Goa, by lighting a lamp exactly at 1035 am.

Dr Vijay Agarwal and his team from the Mumbai Fortis Hospital, which consisted of 5 cardiologists, 2 cardiac nurses and 2 paramedical staff, consulted 84 children that attended, out of the 94 registered.

2 children were in the last stages of their illness and were deemed beyond repair. They will probably live for 6 months to a year.

One child will need heart transplantation and he will have to wait for a donor.

40% of the children will require some kind of surgical intervention which will be particularised following further investigations which will ensue over the course of this week.

All the children and their families were provided with breakfast and lunch. On their departure, as a final token of love, they were provided with an evening tiffin.

The camp concluded with aarti of Bhagwan Sri Sathya Sai Baba which was performed by Dr Vijay Agarwal.

The actual work of saving and bettering lives will start with enhanced investigations and costly surgical interventions which will supervene. A detailed report will be provided by Dr Vijay Agarwal to Heart Valve Bank which will be published on the website. As mentioned in the last month’s report, all the investigations and operations will be free of charge, courtesy of the brotherhood of man and the fatherhood of God.

Activities in Cardiology/Cardiothoracic (The Heart)

Dr Vijay Agarwal, Paediatric Cardiothoracic Surgeon, has successfully operated on 15 children from the medical camp in Bhagalpur in the month of February. A single individual sponsored 10 of these patients as tribute to the world congenital heart awareness day held on the 14th February 2015.

An additional sponsor came forward in the second half of February enabling the operation of an additional 5 patients, thereby reducing the numbers of children waiting to be operated from 148 to 133.

HVB are currently making arrangements to get a patient with valvular heart disease from Kenya for surgery in India.

Accomplishments in Oncology (Fight against Cancer)

The VIRAT hospice currently houses 16 patients. A 45 year old farmer, diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma of Tibia bone (a rare cancer of bone in leg), was admitted to the Virat hospice for terminal care. Dr Gumastha, the medical director at Virat, felt that further treatment was possible and the patient was referred for further investigations. It was concluded that because the cancer had not spread above his knee, it was indeed possible to treat him. He had life saving amputation of his leg and he would be receiving a leg prosthesis to aid him in walking. He is currently in post operative care. Investigation and treatment were all sponsored by VIRAT in collaboration with HVB.

The latest admission in the hospice is a 9 year old boy with a brain tumour.
